[hippos on the beach]

onshore a thousand eyes follow children
playing in the shallows,
deathly unaware of danger lurking
and the parents, like bloodhounds
sniffing at the air they are
giraffes scanning for lions
disguised as sharks
and everywhere, great hippos roam the beach
